1. Archie- a book with great side characters
A Court of Mist and Fury- Sarah J. Maas
I tried so hard to not mention Sarah J. Maas, okay? But this question is perfectly ACOMAF! Sarah manages to make every single character in her books as complex as each other- even tiny characters have complex backstories and that's what makes her stories so compelling and intricate- you know everyone's drives and what motivates them. Particularly in ACOMAF, there are so many amazing characters (specifically the inner circle) and they're all fleshed out so well- my all-time favourite cast of characters.
Shane Collins- the Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine
With a dead mother and sister as well as a psychotic dad... it's safe to say that Shane definitely comes from a broken home. Despite this murky past and a heap of anger issues, Shane is a great and lovable character with his quick quips and swoon-worthy looks. He has great character development through this series and learns not to let his broken home define his future.
3. Veronica- a character who could have been one dimensional
Seth- the Covenant and Titan series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
From the very beginning, Seth could've been one honking cliche: arrogant but attractive ass that flirts with everything that walks and has major daddy issues. But... from the Covenant series when he's first introduced to the Titan series where he's the protagonist, his character is so much more! Sure, he's still arrogant, attractive and often prone to asshole moves but he also has so much depth, so much past, so many insecurities. JLA could've easily made him a one dimensional character but, luckily, she fleshed him out beautifully.
4. Betty- a great sibling relationship
Julian and siblings- The Dark Artifices trilogy by Cassandra Clare
I think Julian and his siblings have the best relationships ever in YA literature- all other siblings are arguing or not interested in each other. Julian would do anything for his siblings and their whole family unit is so sweet to read about.
5. Cheryl- a character who acts tough, but is secretly an emotional wreck
Catherine- Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Heartless follows the infamous Queen of Hearts before she got her title and reputation- just a small town girl called Catherine who wanted to bake. Catherine definitely acts tough (she is the Queen of Hearts) but in reality, she's one huge gooey mess of emotion. Sure, she goes through a heck of a lot but all her past trauma turns her into a cold and heartless person.
6. Josie and the Pussycats- a strong female who is more than just their stereotype
First off, I respectfully disagree with this question because Josie and the pussycats are completely their stereotype. Not only are they the 'token black people' with no depth, they're everything their stereotype represents...
But, regarding the question.
Cress- The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
Cress is tiny and shy and timid but, through the course of the books, she smashes out of her shy-girl stereotype. She's funny, brave and one hell of a genius! Cress saves the day on multiple occasions, successfully slipping out of that damsel-in-dress shell.
7. Polly- a character who gets locked up (physically, mentally, emotionally, etc).
Kaylee Cavanaugh- Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent
I can't think of any other character who goes through as much as Kaylee does. Kaylee manages to get locked up physically, mentally and emotionally which is quite a feat. Kaylee inspires me so much because she's strong and stubborn and compassionate despite everything she's been through and she literally goes to hell to protect her friends and family.
8. Jason- a character death that broke your heart OR a character death that made you cheer 'finally!'
Aron Lagaris- the Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes
This guy took way too long to die!! So when he finally did, I was elated. He's not even a major character but he was in it enough to annoy the hell out of me.
9. Riverdale- a world-building win
The Host- Stephanie Meyers
I really love the Host universe- especially how plausible it is. The premise of aliens invading and needing human bodies as hosts is such a great idea and the way this world was built, both in the book and then translated into the movie, was definitely a world-building win.
